Art of temperature: why low-temp dabbing is the key

You have bought yourself a good extract, opened the jar and caught that hit of terpenes. Now comes the part that matters: not burning it.

With extracts like rosin or live resin, temperature is the line between a proper treat and wasted potential.
In this article we explain why every degree counts and how to find your sweet spot.

Why does high heat kill the flavour?

Most beginners make the same mistake — they heat the Banger red hot and apply the extract straight away. The result? Thick, harsh smoke and a burnt aftertaste.
The problem is physical:

• Terpenes start evaporating at very low temperatures (around 150 °C).
• Above 315 °C the delicate terpenes are destroyed for good and harsher compounds take their place.
  
  A guide to the temperature zones:

1. Low-Temp (150 °C – 230 °C) — where the flavour lives
   This is the zone where premium extracts like rosin come into their own.

• Flavour: at its fullest and cleanest — you catch every nuance of the strain.
• Vapour: thinner and cooler.
• Tip: if a little liquid is left in the bottom, that is fine. Just wipe it out with a cotton swab.

1. Medium-Temp (230 °C – 290 °C) — the middle ground
   A good middle ground if you want somewhat denser clouds but still want the flavour profile.

• Flavour: still there, but less pronounced than at low temperatures.
• Vapour: denser and warmer.

1. High-Temp (above 300 °C) — the road to scorching
   Temperatures to stay away from with good extracts.

• Flavour: burnt popcorn, a metallic aftertaste.
• Risk: this is where chazzing happens — extract residue burnt straight into the pores of the quartz banger, which ruins it for good.

How do you hit the right temperature?

If you do not have an electronic e-nail where you can simply set the temperature, you have to fall back on technique:

1. Cool-down time: after heating the banger, wait 45 to 60 seconds (depending on how thick the glass is) before you apply the extract.
2. Terp slurpers: if you are running a Slurper, its design spreads the heat evenly across the whole surface, which helps hold a low temperature for longer.
3. Clean is the foundation: never heat a dirty banger. Old burnt residue distorts the temperature and wrecks the flavour of the new dab completely.
   
   
   Less is sometimes more — and with dab temperature that goes double. If you want to get everything out of your material, put the money into a decent thermometer or simply wait longer for it to cool down. Your palate will thank you.
