JCVAP vs. Puffco: what is the difference between the chambers, and which should you pick?

Two different approaches to vaporising extracts

If you are into electronic dab rigs (e-rigs), you have certainly come across the two names that come up most often — Puffco and JCVAP. Both makers aim at the same people — those who are into extracts — but their thinking is fundamentally different. Puffco builds a closed, tightly worked-out ecosystem with a single chamber type, while JCVAP offers an open platform with a wide range of materials and spare parts — including chambers that drop straight onto an original Puffco Peak or Peak Pro.

In this article we go through the differences in detail: from chamber materials through performance and temperature ranges to price, and who each system suits better.

What JCVAP is and how its approach differs

Unlike Puffco, JCVAP is not only a manufacturer of its own devices, but is also the largest third-party manufacturer of replacement chambers and inserts that are directly compatible with the Puffco Peak and Peak Pro. This means that owners of Puffco devices can replace the original ceramic chamber with a JCVAP chamber and thus gain features that Puffco does not offer.

The key chamber in the JCVAP range is the 5D XXL — according to the maker, up to 32% larger than the Puffco 3DXL. The chamber uses a 5D heating system, which warms the material not only from below (like a standard 3D chamber) but from the sides as well. That is meant to make the heating more even and to preserve the flavour and terpene profile of the extract. The chamber also comes with a turbo cap with adjustable airflow.

The real advantage of JCVAP, though, is the choice of insert material you can fit in the chamber:

• Quartz — fast heat-up, clean flavour, a favourite among flavour chasers.
• Ruby — very good heat retention and durability; synthetic sapphire and ruby are used in premium inserts too.
• SiC (silicon carbide) — fast, even heat build-up.
• AlN (aluminium nitride) — high thermal conductivity, fast temperature ramp.
• Titanium (Titan ICA) — medical-grade titanium, corrosion-resistant, tough and very long-lasting.

Direct comparison: JCVAP vs. Puffco

Chamber material. Puffco offers ceramic only. JCVAP gives you a choice of five different materials, which lets you tune both flavour and heat-up speed to your own preference.

Chamber size. According to the maker's specs, the JCVAP 5D XXL is 32% larger than the Puffco 3DXL — useful if you want to load more material in one session.

Price. JCVAP is the cheaper option across the board — both for replacement chambers and for inserts, which usually cost less than an original Puffco 3DXL chamber.

Fit and warranty. One important note here: JCVAP chambers for the Puffco Peak and Peak Pro are aftermarket products. The maker designs them around the average dimensions of a large number of Peak Pro units, so they are not an official Puffco part. For the vast majority of users they fit without trouble, but small tolerance differences between individual Peak Pro units cannot be ruled out. Using a non-original chamber may also affect the warranty on the original device — worth checking before you buy.

Both brands have their place, and it mostly comes down to whether you prefer a closed premium ecosystem (Puffco) or an open platform with a choice of material and a lower price (JCVAP). Before you decide, think about how often you will swap the chamber, what kind of flavour you are after, and whether the app connection matters to you.
