JCVAP vs. Puffco: What’s the difference between the chambers, and which one should you choose?

Two different approaches to vapourising extracts

If you’re familiar with the world of electronic dab rigs (so-called ‘e-rigs’), you’ve no doubt come across the two names that come up most often – Puffco and JCVAP. Both manufacturers target the same user group – namely, enthusiasts of extracts – but their philosophies differ fundamentally. Puffco is built around a closed, sophisticated ecosystem with a single type of chamber, whilst JCVAP offers an open platform with a wide range of materials and spare parts – including chambers that can be fitted directly onto the original Puffco Peak or Peak Pro.

In this article, we’ll examine the differences in detail: from the materials used in the chambers, through performance and temperature ranges, to price, and which system is best suited to whom.

What It is JCVAP, and how does its approach differ?

Unlike Puffco, JCVAP is not only a manufacturer of its own devices, but is also the largest third-party manufacturer of replacement chambers and inserts that are directly compatible with the Puffco Peak and Peak Pro. This means that owners of Puffco devices can replace the original ceramic chamber with a JCVAP chamber and thus gain features that Puffco does not offer.

A key chamber in the JCVAP range is the model 5D XXL – according to the manufacturer, up to 32 % larger than the Puffco 3DXL. The chamber utilises a so-called 5D heating system, which heats the material not only from below (as in conventional 3D chambers), but also from the sides, which is designed to improve the uniformity of heating and preserve the flavour and terpene profile of the extract. The chamber also features a turbo lid with adjustable airflow.

However, a key advantage of the JCVAP is the choice of insert material that can be fitted into the chamber:

• Quartz – heats up quickly, clean flavour, a favourite amongst flavour chasers.
• Ruby (rubies) – excellent heat retention and durability; synthetic sapphire/ruby is also used in premium attachments.
• SiC (silicon carbide) – rapid and even heat build-up.
• AlN (aluminium nitride) – high thermal conductivity, rapid temperature rise.
• Titan (Titan ICA) – a medical-grade titanium alloy, resistant to corrosion and mechanical damage, and extremely durable.

Direct Comparison: JCVAP vs. Puffco

Chamber material. Puffco offers ceramic models only. JCVAP offers a choice of five different materials, allowing you to tailor both the flavour and the heating speed to your personal preferences.

Chamber size. According to the manufacturer’s specifications, the JCVAP 5D XXL is 32 % larger than the Puffco 3DXL – suitable for users who want to load more material into a single session.

Price. JCVAP is the more affordable option in every respect – whether it’s replacement chambers or inserts, which are generally more affordable than the original Puffco 3DXL chamber.

Compatibility and warranty. It is important to note here that JCVAP chambers for the Puffco Peak/Peak Pro are so-called aftermarket products. The manufacturer designs them based on the average dimensions of a large number of Peak Pro units; they are therefore not official Puffco parts. For the vast majority of users, they fit without any problems, but slight variations in tolerances between individual Peak Pro units cannot be ruled out. Furthermore, using a non-original chamber may affect the warranty on the original device – it is worth checking this before purchasing.

Both brands have their place in the market, and it mainly depends on whether you prefer a closed, premium ecosystem (Puffco) or an open platform offering a choice of materials and a lower price (JCVAP).
